    Description

    1798/7 Eagle, 7x6 Stars, BD-2
    Exceedingly Rare Variety

1798/7 $10 7x6 Stars PCGS Genuine. BD-2, Low R.6. The PCGS number ending in .98 suggests Damage as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an AU specimen that has been tooled and cleaned. In any condition the 1798/7 eagle with stars arranged seven left, six right is an issue that is exceedingly rare, with Bass-Dannreuther estimating that only 20 to 30 examples survive. Akers writes that this issue is second in rarity among 1795-1804 eagles only to the 1795 Nine Leaves. A wealth of pleasing detail remains on this piece, despite the smoothing that is more prominent on the obverse but seen on both sides, likely to remove larger signs of contact; smaller marks remain scattered about. The intermediate die state is interesting; several of the State b obverse cracks show, yet none of the cracks appear on the reverse through the tops of UN and TED.
