Description
1799 BD-10 Eagle, AU55
Wonderful Patina, Large Obverse Stars
1799 $10 Large Obverse Stars, BD-10, R.3, AU55 NGC.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. Antique surfaces have a green-gold
base adorned with russet highlights at the periphery. No abrasions
are individually distracting, and very few exist overall. The 1799
eagle contains the largest number of die marriages for any year of
this denomination at 10, but the award for the highest mintage year
goes to 1801 at 44,344 coins, compared to 1799's mintage of 37,449.
The rarity distribution skews even more in favor of a small number
of common varieties than this information may suggest. Two R.3
varieties carry the year, with the remainder ranking R.5 or R.6
except for the BD-1 at R.7. Thankfully for the collector, one R.3
variety belongs to each of the two major types of the year, Small
Obverse Stars and Large Obverse Stars. The latter type, represented
here, was produced second, and its most common die marriage, BD-10
only experienced two die states throughout its long life. The
present example is from the more common, earlier state, dubbed a/a
by Bass-Dannreuther, which does not have the obverse crack through
star 6.From The Costa Family Collection, Part II.
