Description

1799 Draped Bust Eagle, BD-10, MS63
Sharply Struck Large Obverse Stars

1799 $10 Large Obverse Stars, BD-10, R.3, MS63 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. This specimen is an intermediate die state with an emerging but faint obverse die crack through star 6, and without the rim crumbling between stars 12 and 13. Chief Engraver Robert Scot prepared a new star punch for the 1799 Large Obverse Stars and it was only used on two of the ten die marriages for the year, BD-9 which is a very rare R-6+, and the more frequently found BD-10. Attribution of the reverse die of BD-10 is by the lowest berry being under the right foot of the last A in AMERICA. The reverse die was also used in 1800 on BD-1, and finally on 1801 BD-1.
This wonderful example is sharply struck, with the Large Obverse Stars fully formed and having crisp radial lines. All details of Miss Liberty have excellent definition, including the hair curls, drapery lines, and profile features. The reverse eagle has fully formed breast, wing, and tail feathers, along with sharp arrow detail and shield lines. Rich yellow-gold coloration with orange overtones gives lovely eye appeal. Glowing luster is satiny in the fields and frosty on the devices. Grade-consistent minor marks are on both sides, none being bothersome. This outstanding coin would make a great representative of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle ten dollar design type.
