Description
1799 Capped Bust Right Eagle, MS64
Large Obverse Stars, BD-10
Seldom Seen Finer
1799 $10 Large Obverse Stars, BD-10, R.3, MS64 NGC.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, the usual state, with perfect dies.
According to the 2026 Guide Book, the Philadelphia Mint
struck 37,449 Capped Bust Right eagles in 1799, a small production
in absolute terms, but quite substantial in the context of the
series. Ten die varieties are known for the date, eight with Small
Obverse Stars, and two with Large Obverse Stars. This coin is a
representative of the BD-10 variety, with Large Obverse Stars and
the lowest berry in the branch under the right foot of the second A
in AMERICA on the reverse. The BD-10 dies were sturdier than dies
from earlier years and were probably used to strike about 12,500 to
17,500 examples of the reported mintage. This was the only use of
the obverse die, but the hardy reverse was used again to strike all
the eagles in 1800 and the BD-1 variety of 1801. The BD-10 is a
relatively available issue, making it a popular choice with type
collectors. This spectacular Choice example exhibits sharply detailed design elements in all areas, aside from a touch of softness on obverse star 12. Fine definition is evident on Liberty's curls and all the feathers of the eagle's breast, tail, and neck. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces show only a few scattered, minor signs of contact, none that merit individual mention. The pleasing surfaces show a mix of satiny mint luster and slight prooflike reflectivity in the fields. Overall eye appeal is terrific. This coin possesses a winning combination of high technical quality, outstanding visual appeal, and strong historic interest. It should find a home in the finest collection or type set. Census (all varieties): 33 in 64, 6 finer (8/25).
