Description

1799 Draped Bust Eagle, MS64 CAC
Magnificent Large Stars, BD-10

1799 $10 Large Obverse Stars, BD-10, R.3, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The 1799 Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle ten dollar gold had a total mintage of 37,449 coins. There are two major varieties, the Small Obverse Stars and the Large Obverse Stars. This superb high grade example is the Large Obverse Stars variety, which is further divided into two die marriages. The BD-9 die pairing is a very rare R.6 plus with 14 to 18 survivors extant. This specimen is the scarce BD-10 variety, with an estimated 300 to 400 examples known. While BD-10 is frequently available in About Uncirculated and lower Mint State grades, in MS64 it becomes rare for both the variety and date. The BD-10 die marriage is attributed by identification of the Large Obverse Stars, which have thicker tines and are slightly larger than the Small Obverse Stars. The BD-10 reverse is distinguished from the lowest berry being directly over the right serif of the last A in AMERICA.
The iconic Draped Bust gold was beautifully designed and engraved by Chief Engraver Robert Scot in 1795, starting with the first half eagle deliveries on July 31, and then to the eagle with 1,097 coins delivered on September 22. This popular design lasted until 1807 with the quarter eagles and half eagles. The Heraldic Eagle reverse first appeared in 1796 on the quarter eagle, coinciding with the start of hostilities for the undeclared Quasi-War between the United States and France, fought almost entirely at sea.

This exceptional example has frosty luster radiating throughout the devices and fields on both the obverse and reverse sides. Deep yellow gold has light orange highlights, enhancing the wonderful eye appeal. Only small marks can be seen under magnification. The strike is good, with some weakness for stars 12 and 13, and opposite reverse clouds and adjacent OF lettering. Light adjustment marks appear on the reverse, mostly in the weakly struck areas of the clouds and lettering. The all-important eagle's head and neck feathers are sharply defined and not affected by the adjustment marks. Overall, the presentation is excellent on this magnificent coin, endorsed by CAC.
