    Description

    1799 Eagle, Partly Lustrous AU50
    Rare BD-2 Die Marriage
    Small Obverse Stars

1799 $10 Small Obverse Stars, BD-2, High R.5, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/c, cracked on both sides. The heaviest crack is vertical from the rim near the L in LIBERTY down into Liberty's cap. BD-2 is a rare variety of this otherwise plentiful date, with an estimated survivorship of only 35 to 45 coins. John Dannreuther suggests that only 1,500 to 2,000 pieces were ever struck from this die pair. The coin offered here is sharply struck and displays complete border dentils. Partial luster remains in the peripheral fields complementing honey-gold color overall. Neither side has distracting blemishes. Housed in an old rattler holder. (NGC ID# 2624, Variety PCGS# 45725, Base PCGS# 98562)
