Description

1799 BD-6 Eagle, XF45
From the Detroit Money Museum

1799 $10 Small Obverse Stars, BD-6, R-5, XF45 PCGS. Ex: National Bank of Detroit Money Museum. The money museum displayed items from the collection of Detroit businessman Nate S. Shapero who was a director of the bank. Another famous collector, Oscar Dodson, was hired as the curator of the museum. The museum was open from 1960 until about 1992. Afterward, coins were dispersed in a trio of auctions in 1992 and 1993.

The obverse is cracked from the border to the upper points of star 8, extending down along the back edge of the cap into Liberty's hair. This Choice XF 1799 ten dollar piece was once a part of the collection held at the National Bank of Detroit. Lovely rose toning frames the rich golden surfaces of this exceptional and elusive early eagle. A curved scratch on Liberty's neck identified this as the Detroit money museum coin.
Ex: Craig A. Whitford Numismatic Auctions (4/1993), lot 1291 (plated).
