Description
1799 Draped Bust Ten Dollar, MS62
Exceptional BD-7, Small Obverse Stars
1799 $10 Small Obverse Stars, BD-7, R.3, MS62 PCGS.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State f/d. Extensive obverse die cracks
through the stars and a heavy crack from rim through E to curl are
found on this late die state of 1799 BD-7. The date of this variety
has 17 evenly spaced but tilted far right, especially the 7, which
is also higher than the 1. This is the first of two usages for the
obverse die. The reverse has star 12 well away from the beak with a
single point touching the scroll. Second usage of reverse die. Ten
die marriages were need to strike 37,449 Draped Bust, Heraldic
Eagle ten dollar coins in 1799. The Small Obverse Stars are found
on eight of the varieties, while the Large Obverse Stars occur on
the last two varieties of 1799. John Dannreuther defines the 1799
Heraldic Eagle reverse as "Short Thick Neck" which was used until
1804, when the ten dollar denomination was suspended.Attractive medium yellow-gold surfaces with olive overtones. The the luster is thick and frosty, radiating over the surfaces. Minor contact marks are seen on the portrait and the reverse shield. The strike is strong with all obverse and reverse stars well-formed, along with crisp definition of hair curls, drapery lines, and eagle details including wing, breast and neck feathers. This exceptional specimen would make a great type coin for the iconic Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle ten dollar gold design.
