    Description

    1799 BD-7 Eagle, MS62
    Small Obverse Stars, Irregular Date
    Prooflike Reflectivity

1799 $10 Small Obverse Stars, BD-7, R.3, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c, with dentil crumble at stars 1 and 2 in its earliest stage. BD-7 is most interesting for its diminished clouds, which were inadvertently reduced in scale by a mint worker, either to remove clash marks or simply to prepare the die for coinage.

This luminous example has mildly prooflike surfaces and copper-orange accents in the fields. No adjustment marks are present, and the strike is unusually sharp for this large denomination. Careful evaluation with a loupe fails to locate any consequential marks. Early eagles are under formidable demand from gold type set collectors, especially those is similarly high grades.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 3617.
