Description

Important 1799 BD-5 Eagle, AU Details

1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. Breen-6838, Taraszka-17, BD-5, R.6. Two examples of this rare variety are offered in the present sale, probably both unknown to John Dannreuther when he published Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties, A Study of Die States, 1795-1834, in 2006. He stated just 22 to 30 examples are known, although the actual population could be slightly higher or lower.
A few faint hairlines are indicative of the cleaning, yet the overall appearance is exceptional, with frosty greenish-gold surfaces and virtually full luster broken only by slight highpoint wear.(Registry values: P2)
