Description

1799 BD-2 Small Stars Obverse
Eagle, Mint State, High R.5

1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse MS61 NGC. Breen-6839, Taraszka-14, BD-2, High R.5. There are several eagles with Small Stars obverses dated 1799, but only the BD-2 shows star 9 well distant from LIBERTY and star 13 well separated from the forward point of the bust. The reverse is a reuse of the BD-1 pairing, showing a star tip between the eagle's upper and lower jaws and the left bottom serif of the A in AMERICA directly over the fourth wing feather.
This charming piece is evenly struck throughout, with somewhat muted, satiny luster. Strike or shelf doubling appears on most of LIBERTY and the right-side obverse stars. A number of tiny abrasions peppered over each side are undistracting; the only ones worth mentioning are to the right of the bust point on the obverse, and between S O on the reverse. Each side displays a slight reddish tinge. A nice and rare Mint State specimen of this Small Stars variety. Bass-Dannreuther estimate that only 35 to 45 examples are known, in all grades.(Registry values: P2)
