    Description

    Late-State 1800 Eagle, BD-1, Choice AU
    Struck After Some 1801-Dated Pieces

1800 $10 AU55 NGC. BD-1, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/e. The recorded calendar-year mintage for the 1800 eagle is some 5,999 pieces, all struck using the same die pairing -- but not all in the same die state. The reverse of the 1800 BD-1 was first used to strike the 1799 Large Stars BD-10, then some of the 1800 BD-1s, then some of the 1801 BD-1s, then more of the 1800 BD-1s -- all determined from the die state evidence of those respective varieties. Thus it is that the 1800-dated eagles must have been struck in a larger quantity than 6,000 coins, as some of them were clearly struck after the 1801 BD-1. Bass-Dannreuther estimate that perhaps 200 to 300 survive, with an original mintage that could have been as large as 12,500 coins bearing the 1800 date.
This coin's die state tells us conclusively that it is among those produced after the 1801 BD-1. The obverse shows fairly heavy cracking in the area of LIBERTY, but the reverse is the telltale: Minor reverse cracks appear that are absent in combination with the 1801 obverse, including two in the area of the eagle's tail feathers. This Choice AU piece shows much luster remaining under light field chatter, although some larger marks appear in the right field before Liberty's eyes. There are no obvious planchet adjustment marks, and the color is a deep, attractive reddish-orange.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFYT, PCGS# 8563)
