Description

1800 Draped Bust Eagle, BD-1, AU58
Excellent Low Mintage Specimen

1800 $10 BD-1, High R.3, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/e. The obverse die has die cracks through LIBERTY and has been lapped, while the reverse has also been lapped and has a faint die crack from tails feathers through claw and outer leaves. The 1800 Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle ten dollar gold has only one die variety, BD-1, used to strike and deliver 5,999 coins through the calendar year 1800. However, both Harry Bass and John Dannreuther identified a die remarriage, where some of the 1800-dated eagles were struck during 1801, prompting Dannreuther to estimate a range of 5,999 to 12,500 coins dated 1800, with the high end of the range being more probable.

This excellent near-Mint specimen is fully struck, forming the beautiful device elements that were skillfully designed and engraved by Chief Engraver Robert Scot. Miss Liberty's hair curls are sharp, and even the eagle's breast and neck feathers are well defined. The luster is satiny on the devices and slightly reflective in fields from the lapping of the dies. Medium yellow-gold with olive hues. Minor circulation marks from the coin's short time in circulation. With the full strike and bold details, this example would make an excellent type coin from a lower mintage year.
