Description

Appealing AU Sharpness 1800 Eagle, BD-1

1800 $10 --Improperly Cleaned--NGC. AU Details. Breen-6842, Taraszka-23, BD-1, High R.3. BD Obverse State b/Reverse State d. Only the one die marriage is known for the year, with the Y in LIBERTY nearly touching the ninth star and the 1 virtually touching the lowest hair curl. The reverse is a carryover from the 1799 Large Stars BD-10, and it would be used again on the 1801 BD-1 (and reused in a different die state with the 1800 obverse after a different 1801 reverse failed).
The obverse of this piece shows the die crack light above LIB and heavier from the rim through BERT, while the Reverse State d is from the clashing of the obverse denticles above STAT. While the greenish-gold surfaces are a bit on the bright side, this is a splendid early gold type coin that offers many attractions. There are no singular signs of contact on either side, the strike is bold and well-centered, and there are no planchet adjustment marks--a piece worthy of strong bidding despite the minor distraction.(Registry values: P2)
