Attractive Mint State 1800 Ten Dollar Gold
1800 $10 MS61 PCGS. B. 1-A, Taraszka-23, the only known dies, R.4. The 1800 has an original mintage of just 5,999 coins, and survivors are rarer than those of the 1795, 1797 Heraldic Eagle, 1799, 1801, and 1803. The 1796 and 1804 are rarer, although just barely. The present example is considerably finer than the typically offered VF-AU example. The otherwise frosty textured surfaces exhibit modest, yet appreciable hints of brightness in the fields. The color is a rich, reddish-gold shade. All features are uncommonly well struck for a product of the early Philadelphia Mint with the exception of the left and right obverse denticles. The presence of adjustment marks (as produced) is seen at the center of the obverse. Struck from a late die state, there are numerous branching obverse die cracks (also as struck) along the tops of the letters in LIBERTY. Pedigree concerns compel us to mention a thin, nearly vertical pinscratch on the reverse running through the right side of the shield. (NGC ID# BFYT, PCGS# 8563)Weight: 17.50 grams
Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
