Satiny 1800 Eagle, MS62

1800 $10 MS62 PCGS. Breen-6842, Taraszka-23, BD-1, R.3. A single die pair was used to coin every 1800 eagle, regardless of the year it was actually struck. The reverse die was used for three different varieties that represent three different years. An interrupted emission chain is documented: 1799 BD-10; 1800 BD-1; 1801 BD-1; 1800 BD-1. The final examples dated 1800 were coined after the 1801 pieces.
Die state examination is carefully examined by Anthony Taraszka in United States Ten Dollar Gold Eagles. The obverse has heavy die cracks near and through LIBERTY. Several reverse die cracks indicate that this example is one of the last coins struck during the early production period just before the die was used the 1801 obverse. Reverse cracks appear through the outer leaves, claw, stem, and tail to the edge below the arrow butts; from the tail through the arrows and UNI; from the border through the tops of ME; and faintly through the base of TED.
Both sides are highly lustrous with brilliant yellow gold that tends toward pale green. The fields are smooth and attractive with a few faint hairlines but no other blemishes. Heavy adjustment marks through TED ST and the left wing tip result in opposing weakness at the left obverse border and stars. Quite a few Mint State 1800 eagles are known, although most rank in the lower numerical levels, with MS62 and MS63 grade pieces near the top of the Census.
