Description

Choice XF 1800 Eagle, BD-1

1800 $10 XF45 PCGS. Breen-6842, Taraszka-23, BD-1, High R.3. The only die pairing known for this issue, which the Guide Book records as having been struck to the extent of 5,999 pieces. This single reverse, featuring the eagle's beak touching or nearly touching star 12 at two points, was also used with obverses dated 1799 and 1801. Bass-Dannreuther estimate that the actual mintage of this variety could have ranged as high as 12,500 coins (likely including production in 1799 and 1801), making it an ideal acquisition for a type set. This specimen has reddish patina interspersed over each side, creating significant contrast against the natural greenish-gold color of the gold alloy. There are no mentionable contact marks on either side, just light wear consistent with the grade.(Registry values: P2)
