Description

Lovely 1801 BD-2 Eagle, AU53

1801 $10 AU53 PCGS. Breen-6843, Taraszka-25, BD-2, R.2. Two die varieties are known for the 1801 eagles, and they are easily distinguished with one glance toward the obverse. The relative position of the bottom and top left stars will be sufficient. On the BD-1 variety, which is an important rarity, star 1 is closer to the curl than star 8 is to the cap. The BD-2 variety, offered here, has star 1 farther from the curl and star 8 closer to the cap. This variety is arguably the single most common die variety of all early eagles, and it is an ideal choice for the date or type collector. A few light hairlines and minor abrasions are seen in the fields. It is an attractive example with bright surfaces and attractive reddish-gold coloration, particularly on the reverse.
