Description
Sharply Struck 1801 Eagle, AU53
Rare BD-1 Variety
1801 $10 AU53 PCGS. Breen-6843, Taraszka-24, BD-1, R.5. The
1801 eagle boasts a mintage of 44,344 pieces, and there are two
known varieties for the date. The present coin is a representative
of the rare BD-1 variety, easily distinguished by the obverse
stars, which have thicker, stubbier spines than the more available
BD-2 variety. The BD-1 is nicknamed the Horned Beak variety because
clash marks on the reverse sometimes produce the appearance of a
tiny horn on the back of the eagle's head. The present coin is a delightful specimen with attractive yellow-gold surfaces and a minimum number of abrasions for the grade. Only light, even wear shows on the high points of the design, and much original detail remains in the feathers on the eagle's breast and the star centrils. John Dannreuther estimates only 40-50 examples of the BD-1 variety survive today in all grades.
