Rare 1801 BD-1 Eagle, AU551801 $10 AU55 NGC. Breen-6843, Taraszka-24, BD-1, R.5. The obverse has two points of star 1 close to the curl, and a single point of star 8 farther from the cap, diagnostic for this scarce die marriage. The reverse die was also used for 1799 BD-10 eagles and 1800 BD-1 eagles, the latter in early and late states with the latest examples--such as the 1800 in the present sale--struck after the 1801 eagles.
This pleasing green-gold example has satiny luster with slightly reflective surfaces. Both sides have minor marks consistent with the grade. The high points have a trace of wear with pale orange color. Only about 40 to 50 examples of this rare variety are known.
