    Choice AU 1801 Eagle
    Very Scarce BD-1 Variety

1801 $10 AU55 PCGS. Breen-6843, Taraszka-24, BD-1, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die-State b/d. The 1801 Capped Bust Right eagle claims a large mintage of 44,344 pieces, but only two varieties are known for the date. This specimen represents the very scarce BD-1 variety, sometimes called the "Horned Beak" variety, with star 8 away from the cap and star 13 away from the bust. John Dannreuther believes BD-1 accounted for only 2,500-4,000 pieces of the reported mintage, with 40-50 specimens surviving today in all grades.
The present coin is a well-preserved specimen, with just a hint of wear on the high points of the design elements. The surfaces are a rich green and orange-gold color, with much original mint luster remaining intact. Prominent die cracks are present on the obverse, between 0 and 1 in the date and from star 13 to the throat.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
