    Description

1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle, AU58
    Popular BD-2 Variety

1801 $10 AU58 PCGS. BD-2, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. A substantial mintage of 44,344 Capped Bust Right eagles was accomplished in 1801, but die state evidence indicates some of the coins were dated 1800 (and possibly even 1799). Only two die varieties are known for the date, with this coin representing the more available BD-2 variety, with star 8 near Liberty's cap. The BD-2 probably accounted for 30,000-40,000 pieces of the reported mintage, with a surviving population of 600-800 examples in all grades.

This attractive near-Mint specimen shows just a trace of wear on the design elements and the antique-gold surfaces show a scattering of minor contact marks, with traces of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
