    Description

    1801 Ten Dollar, BD-2, AU53
    Attractive, Original Coloration

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, AU53 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The obverse is readily identified by star 1, which is distant from the curl. Star 13 nearly touches the drapery. On the reverse, star 12 has a point nearly touching the beak tip, and it touches the banner below above the left upright of U. Only 10 arrows are present in the eagle's claw. The BD-2 variety makes up the majority of 1801 eagles available to collectors, and it is among the most readily available of all early tens, regardless of date or variety.

This is an original example with greenish-gold color that is richly accented by reddish-orange and canary-yellow highlights. A few light marks account for the About Uncirculated grade, although wear from circulation is minimal and the devices are sharp. A row of nine spines in the cap is a well-known anomaly seen on most BD-2 examples, visible on all but the earliest strikes from the obverse die.
