1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle, AU55
    Popular BD-2 Variety

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. A substantial mintage of 44,344 Capped Bust Right eagles was accomplished in 1801, with two die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the more available BD-2 variety, identified by the position of star 1 distant from the hair. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population of the popular BD-2 at 600-800 examples in all grades. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used again to strike the BD-3 variety in 1803.

The present coin is an impressive Choice AU specimen that shows just a trace of wear on the strongly impressed design elements. Some vertical spikes are seen in the cap, identifying the late die state. Heritage numismatist Mark Borckardt believes these spikes were caused by a set screw that fell between a planchet and the obverse die during striking, leaving an impression of its threads on the die. The vivid orange-gold surfaces are appropriately abraded for the grade and show vibrant satiny mint luster throughout. Population (for the variety): 1 in 55, 4 finer (4/19). (NGC ID# 2627, Variety PCGS# 45734, Base PCGS# 8564)
