    Description

1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle, AU58
    Excellent Early Type Coin, BD-2

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The 1801 Capped Bust Right eagle claims the largest mintage of the series, at 44,344 pieces, but some of those coins may have been struck from leftover 1800-dated dies that were still serviceable after the end of the year. Only two die varieties are known for the date. This coin represents the more available BD-2 variety, with a surviving population of 600-800 pieces in all grades. The BD-2 probably accounted for about 30,000-40,000 pieces of the reported mintage, as the other variety of the date is rare. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was later used to strike the BD-3 variety of 1803.

The present coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen, with sharply detailed design elements that show just a trace of wear, and lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces. A few faint planchet adjustment marks are evident in the left obverse stars, but it takes close inspection with a loupe to see them. Vibrant mint luster adds to the outstanding eye appeal, with traces of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas. (NGC ID# 2627, Variety PCGS# 45734, Base PCGS# 8564)
