    Description

1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle, MS61
    Large Stars, BD-2 Variety

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, MS61 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The scarce early die state, without the vertical lines in the cap. A substantial mintage of 44,344 Capped Bust Right eagles was accomplished in 1801, but some of those coins may have been dated 1800, or even 1799. Two die varieties are known for the date. This coin represents the BD-2 variety. with star 8 near the cap and only the upper point of the eagle's beak touching the star on the reverse. The BD-2 is a relatively available variety, with a surviving population of 600-800 examples in all grades. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used again to strike the BD-3 variety of 1803.

The present coin is an impressive MS61 example, with well-detailed design elements and lightly marked orange-gold surfaces that retain much original mint luster. Many areas show prooflike reflectivity, especially on the reverse. Some very faint planchet adjustment marks are evident on the stars on the lower right. The overall presentation is most attractive for this popular early gold issue.
