Description
1801 Draped Bust Eagle, MS62
Outstanding BD-2 Specimen
1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State
b/b. In this die state there is clashing, but the nine vertical
spines within the cap have not yet appeared, which were probably
caused by a misplaced metal object such as a screw, The attribution
is not difficult, since there are only two obverses known for this
year, and on the BD-2 variety star 1 is considerably farther from
the lowest hair curl. Star 8 is close to the cap, and star 13
nearly touches the bust. Reverse attribution key is the upper beak
is just about touching the star right below its point. For such a
large gold coin the surfaces, at least to the naked eye, are
remarkably free of abrasions, large or small. Indeed, even a loupe
reveals only the expected faint ticks and abrasions. Neither the
shallow mark in the right obverse field before Liberty's nose nor a
couple of scrapes on the cheek can be considered significant.
Radiant luster proceeds forth from both sides of this bright
greenish-gold coin, unimpeded by patina. The 1801 BD-2 variety is oftentimes sharply struck, as is definitely the case with the hammered strike of this coin. There is no doubt that this specimen will become the cornerstone of a fine numismatic collection.
