Description

1801 Ten Dollar, XF45
BD-2 Variety

1801 $10 BD-2, R.2, XF45 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. There was an obverse star punch change beginning on this second 1801 die marriage, with Harry Bass noting longer and more narrow spines than the previously used star punch. The present example boasts a solid strike with nice detail on the portrait and eagle. Housed in a green label holder.

The surfaces are medium yellow gold with good luster for the XF45 grade. This coin also has relatively few circulation marks for its time in commerce and has only slight wear on the high points of the design. A good opportunity to obtain this sought-after early gold type, beautifully designed by Chief Engraver Robert Scot.
