Description

AU Definition BD-2 1801 Eagle

1801 $10 --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. Breen-6843, Taraszka-25, BD-2, R.2. Obverse star 1 is distant from the bust, characteristic of BD-2. The open fields are faintly hairlined, and the remaining luster is subdued. Nonetheless, this is a bold example with essentially complete definition on the eagle's breast feathers. The highpoints of the cap, shoulder, and forehead have only a trace of friction. No quarter eagles or half eagles were struck in 1801, while production of eagles peaked that year. Bullion depositors preferred the largest possible denomination, which was the most convenient for foreign trade.(Registry values: P1)
