1801 Capped Bust Right Ten, MS62
1801 $10 MS62 NGC. Breen-6843, BD-2, R.2. The 1801 Capped
Bust Right eagle enjoyed a substantial mintage of 44,344 pieces,
with just two die varieties known for the date. This coin
represents the more available BD-2 variety, with two points of star
8 pointing to the cap, and star 13 near the bust. The BD-2 must
have accounted for the majority of the reported mintage, probably
around 30,000-40,000 pieces. John Dannreuther estimates 600-800
specimens are still extant in all grades.
Popular BD-2 Variety, Early Die State
The present coin is a well-detailed MS62 example, with light greenish-gold surfaces that retain much original mint luster. Only minor contact marks are evident, and eye appeal is quite good. From a very early state of the die, this specimen does not show the 9 die lines in the cap, or the rust lump between stars 2 and 3, that are often seen on the BD-2. Census: 64 in 62, 74 finer (11/11).
