Description
Splendid 1801 BD-2 Eagle, MS62
1801 $10 MS62 PCGS. Breen-6843, Taraszka-25, BD-2, R.2. Two star points are close to the cap on this plentiful variety, distinguished from the scarce BD-1 variety that has two star points close to the low curl. John Dannreuther notes a slight change that first appears on the obverse of this variety. The old star punch was replaced with a new punch that has large stars with thin rays, rather than the heavy rays that were last used for the 1801 BD-1 eagles. The 1801 BD-2 variety is clearly one of the two most plentiful die marriages of all early eagles from 1795 to 1804. There are more Mint State examples of this die combination known then there are pieces of all grades for some of the rare varieties. All of that is positive news for the type collector, who can easily acquire an example in virtually any desired grade through MS64. NGC and PCGS have combined to grade over 400 examples in MS60 through MS64, with four additional pieces that grade MS65. None have been certified finer than MS65.
This lovely piece has brilliant green-gold surfaces with a frosty obverse field and reflective reverse field. Minor obverse clash marks are confined to the center part of the cap, an unusual situation where clash marks appear on a design element. While lower quality than the finest known pieces, this splendid Mint State example will please nearly any collector with its excellent eye appeal.
