Description
Important Select Uncirculated 1801 Ten Dollar, MS63 PCGS
1801 $10 MS63 PCGS. Breen-6843, B. 1-A, Taraszka-24, R.5. The B. 1-A can be quickly distinguished from the B. 2-B by the closeness of star 1 to the curl and by the die crack from the base of the portrait between the 0 and 1 in the date to the denticles. Another arcing crack is noticed from the center of the obverse across to star 13 while a third extends down from the L in LIBERTY. Our experience shows that this die marriage is 8-10 times scarcer than the more commonly encountered B. 2-B.This probable Condition Census B. 1-A is strongly detailed in all areas and both sides are draped in attractive reddish patina. The obverse, while showing a bit of scuffiness in the fields, appears to have escaped without adjustment marks while the otherwise better preserved reverse displays a squiggly planchet crack on the left side of the shield and a closely grouped series of adjustment marks across the middle stars. The 1801 is the second most obtainable Heraldic Eagle Ten Dollar in better grades, but the fact that it is the much rarer B. 1-A die pairing should be of considerable interest to specialists in early gold.(#8564) (Registry values: P1)
