Satiny Near-Gem 1801 Eagle
1801 $10 MS64 PCGS. B. 2-B, Taraszka-25, R.3. When one compares the availability of early tens to those of 1839-1879, it is apparent that the Liberty design is scarcer, especially in Uncirculated grades. But the early design is far more popular as a type coin. The 1801 is the most frequently seen date in the 1795-1804 series. Sixteen deliveries of this date were made of 1801-dated coins for a total of 29,254 pieces actually struck in this year. To that one must also add another delivery from 1802 (but still dated 1801) that accounts for an additional 15,090 coins. As with many 1801 eagles, this piece shows a number of short "spines" in the cap of Liberty--these actually are die clash marks from the vertical lines in the reverse shield. The striking definition on this piece is amazingly strong for an early ten with complete definition on Liberty's hair and also on the eagle's breast feathers just above the shield on the reverse. The mint luster is thick and satiny with a light overlay of haziness on each side. Very few abrasions are noted, the most obvious ones being a couple of shallow marks out from stars 11 and 12, and on the reverse there is a hairline-thin scratch between the eagle's right (facing) claw and the final A in AMERICA. Sure to be of great interest to the many collectors of gold type, this issue is almost unavailable any finer. Population: 29 in 64, 2 finer (12/04).From The Gold Rush Collection.(#8564) (Registry values: P1)
