    Description

    Superbly Toned Uncirculated 1801 Eagle

1801 MS 61 NGC. B. 2-B. Although most of the Coronet eagles minted before 1879 are significantly rarer in Mint State than their Capped Bust counterparts, the attractiveness and popularity of these early pieces ensures their status as strong auction performers. As an issue, the 1801 has the highest mintage of any of the early eagles and is surpassed in availability only by the 1799. These facts aside, the beauty of this Uncirculated specimen is unsurpassable. The fields are remarkably reflective and contrast brilliantly with the frosted devices. An even blanket of warm, copper-gold patina overlays both sides and serves to diminish the visual impact of the scattered hairlines. A single abrasion below Liberty's eye is the only detraction worthy of individual attention. The strike, however, is as crisp as one can expect and counterbalances the grade-defining marks. A lovely piece from an immensely popular series that must be seen to be fully appreciated. (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
