Description
1803 Ten Dollar, AU58
BD-5, 'Extra Star' Variety
1803 $10 Extra Star AU58 NGC. Breen-6845, Taraszka-30, BD-5,
High R.4. A faint outline of the small "extra" star is seen in the
last cloud on the reverse. Only one obverse die was used to strike
all 1803 eagles, but six reverse dies are known: four with small
reverse stars, and two (BD-5 and BD-6) with large reverse stars.
This piece is Bass-Dannreuther die state g/b, as evidenced by the
die crack on the reverse from the rim to the center of the right
wing, a die line (possibly clashing) in the right wing, and a clash
mark below the third cloud.Charming yellow-gold patina coats the lightly abraded surfaces of this near-Mint State example. Liberty's hair is a touch soft, but the reverse is fully defined with complete feather detail on the breast of the eagle. Flashy luster adds to the aesthetic appeal. John Dannreuther (2006) estimates that 90 to 110 examples of this variety are known, but our experience suggests that the number of survivors is even lower.
