1803 Capped Bust Right Eagle, MS63
    Mysterious Extra Star Variety, BD-5
Only One Finer Coin at PCGS

1803 $10 Extra Star MS63 PCGS. BD-5, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State g/b. The 1803 Capped Bust Right eagle claims a mintage of 15,017 pieces, with six die varieties known for the date. A single obverse was used to coin all six varieties, and the reverse is known in two major subtypes, one with small reverse stars and the other with large reverse stars. The coin offered here represents the very scarce BD-5 variety, showing large reverse stars and an intriguing small extra star imbedded in the last cloud.
Although this variety was known to earlier numismatists, the extra star was unnoticed until Harry Bass discovered it on a specimen he purchased in 1966. The reason for the extra star has never been satisfactorily explained. The BD-5 variety probably accounted for 3,000-5,000 pieces of the reported mintage, with a surviving population of 90-110 examples in all grades.
The present coin is an impressive Select specimen with well-detailed design elements that show just a touch of softness on the lower bust, possibly due to some planchet adjustment marks that are faintly visible at various angles in this area. The pleasing surfaces retain almost all of their original mint luster under attractive shades of orange-gold, olive, and rose patina. No large or distracting contact marks are evident, but a dent in the first strand of Liberty's hair, at the top of the neck, is mentioned for pedigree purposes. This coin will be a welcome addition to a fine collection of early U.S. gold. Population: 2 in 63, 1 finer (11/12).
