    Description

Fascinating 1803 Extra Star Ten Dollar, MS 62 NGC

1803 $10 Extra Star MS 62 NGC. B. 1-E, High R.6. Even though this variety was known to Breen at the time he published his monograph on early eagles, it wasn't until the 1966 ANA Convention that Harry W. Bass, Jr. discovered a small star punched over cloud 7 just above the eagle's right (facing) wing. Although indistinct on many examples of this variety, the present coin reveals this extra star to the naked eye. A loupe is, however, recommended. As an issue, the 1803 is rarer than the 1799 and 1801, particularly in Mint State. Deep green-gold undertones combine with warm orange-gold overtones to present a pleasing, original appearance. There is some haziness in the fields, but modest brightness is noticed at certain angles. Well struck in most areas with no singularly mentionable abrasions, this coin should see spirited bidding from advanced gold collectors.
