Description

1803 Capped Bust Right Eagle, AU55
BD-5, Interesting 14 Star Reverse

1803 $10 Large Reverse Stars, Star on Cloud, BD-5, High R.4, AU55 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State g/b. This is the fifth usage of the workhorse obverse die, used on all 1803 eagle varieties. The coin is toned in antique gold, with some tinges of violet in the reverse lettering. A few scattered marks including the right obverse field, and a small rim bump at star 6, but the coin has good presentation overall.

The small, hidden fourteenth star was first identified by Harry Bass from an example he purchased in 1966. It can be clearly seen only on well struck, high grade examples, within the cloud below F. This extra star remains a mystery, with most theories implying that the tiny star was intentionally punched, although the reason why it was punched remains unclear.
