Description
Extremely Rare 1803 Eagle, BD-6, AU53
Only Seven Examples Known
1803 $10 Large Stars Reverse AU53 NGC. Breen-6846, B. 1-F,
Taraszka-32, BD-6, R.7. Six die varieties of 1803 eagles are known,
from one obverse and six reverse dies. The BD-6 eagle is clearly
the rarest of all six varieties, with only seven examples known to
us.In 1803, the initial punch used for the Small Stars Reverse type (BD-1 through 4) was replaced with a larger star punch (BD-5 and BD-6). BD-5 is also known as the "14 Stars" reverse, with an extra star superimposed on cloud 8, and BD-6, the variety offered here, is the true 13 stars reverse die of the Large Stars type. In 30 years of gold coin collecting, Harry Bass never acquired an example of this variety, the only early eagle that he never obtained. In our June 2008 auction, we offered an MS62 example, and at the time prepared a roster of those pieces known to us. The following is an abbreviated, slightly updated version:
1. MS62 NGC. Heritage (6/2008), lot 2106.
2. MS61 NGC. Heritage (8/1998), lot 7744.
3. AU58 PCGS. Superior (5/2006), lot 1192.
4. AU55. Bowers and Merena (9/1988), lot 538.
5. AU53 NGC. The present specimen. Ex: Superior (6/1981), lot 362.
6. XF45 PCGS. Los Angeles Pre-ANA (Heritage, 7/2009), lot 1297.
7. Net AG3; VG details, ex-Jewelry ANACS. Heritage (3/2003), lot 6347.
This example is an attractive green-gold piece with some luster remaining on both sides. A few scattered surface marks in the field are consistent with the grade. The early gold variety specialist is provided an opportunity to acquire an extremely rare die variety, one that is missing from most collections.(Registry values: P3)
