    Description

    1803 BD-3 Eagle, Lustrous AU58
    CAC Endorsement, Small Reverse Stars

1803 $10 Small Reverse Stars, BD-3, R.4, AU58 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d, clashed. Among 1803 eagle varieties, BD-3 is plentiful with an estimated survivorship of 150 to 200 pieces. Nonetheless, few examples earn CAC recognition for high quality. The variety represents the third die marriage of this obverse in 1803, which was the only obverse die employed that year. The reverse die was previously employed for some 1801 eagle coinage and is seen here in its second and final use.

The present coin displays smooth, lustrous surfaces with rich olive-gold and peach-orange hues. Little discernible wear is present, although moderate strike weakness affects the lower portion of Liberty's bust, the left-hand obverse stars, and the clouds and stars above the eagle on the reverse.
