Description

Charming 1803 BD-3 Eagle, Choice AU
Small Stars Reverse

1803 $10 Small Stars Reverse AU55 PCGS. Breen-6844, Taraszka-28, BD-3, R.4. Of the six known 1803 ten dollar varieties, four are of the Small Stars Reverse type, with the remaining two variants having large stars. Bass-Dannreuther provide numerous methods of identifying the four Small Stars varieties, but perhaps the quickest pick-up point is the star adjacent to the eagle's beak. BD-3 is the only variety in which the lower point of the star points to the center of the left upright of the second U in PLURIBUS.
While BD-3 is the most available of the four 1803 Small Stars Reverse tens, it is anything but common. If fact, specialists believe that fewer than 200 examples are extant, regardless of condition. The strength of strike is variable on this piece and adjustment marks are noted on the obverse rims--both characteristics being common to the issue. The aforementioned shortcomings are dutifully redeemed by the charming straw-gold coloration and smooth surfaces observed on both sides of this numismatic treasure.(Registry values: P2)
