    Sought-After 1804 Ten Dollar AU53

1804 $10 Crosslet 4 AU53 NGC. Breen-6847, B. 1-A, Taraszka-31, R.4. The 1804 is the final year of the Capped Bust Heraldic Eagle type and is at least as rare as the tiny mintage of 3,757 pieces would suggest. As always, this piece shows poorly defined facial features, but the hair curls are remarkably well defined and the eagle's breast is fully articulated. There are several clusters of shallow adjustment marks across the portrait and a die crack has developed from the 8 in the date to star 6. Another die crack jets out from the tip of the bust, through star 11, and into the denticles. The combination of legitimate rarity and the cachet of the 1804 date has always made this a most desirable early Ten Dollar issue.
