1804 $10 Crosslet 4 AU58 NGC. BD-1, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. A nominal mintage of 3,757 Capped Bust Right eagles was accomplished in 1804, but die evidence suggests at least some of those coins were dated 1803. Two die varieties of 1804-dated eagles are known to present-day numismatists, but the extremely rare BD-2 Plain 4 variety was actually struck many years later, in the mid-1830s, for inclusion in the famous diplomatic presentation proof sets that also included the Class I 1804 dollars. The present coin represents the BD-1 variety, easily identified by the Crosslet 4 in the date. The BD-1 is a very scarce variety, with a surviving population of 80-100 examples in all grades.

This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used to strike the BD-6 variety of 1803. The reverse of the 1803-dated coins is in a later die state than its use on the 1804 issue, indicating the 1803 BD-6 was actually struck after the 1804 Crosslet 4, BD-1 variety, and the coins struck from these 1803-dated dies are undoubtedly included in the mintage totals for 1804.

The coin offered here is an attractive near-Mint specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show just a trace of actual wear. The design detail is sharply impressed on the bust and central reverse, but a touch of softness shows on some obverse stars and the eagle's left (facing) claw. The lustrous greenish-gold surfaces show only minor abrasions, the worst being a couple of thin vertical marks in the left obverse field. No planchet adjustment marks are evident, but a small circular planchet depression is noted on Liberty's jaw. The overall presentation is quite attractive. Census: 14 in 58 (1 in 58+), 26 finer (6/14).
