1804 Capped Bust Right Eagle, Unc Details
    Elusive Crosslet 4, BD-1 Variety

1804 $10 Crosslet 4, BD-1, High R.4 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. From a small mintage of 3,757 pieces, the 1804 Capped Bust Right eagle has always been a very scarce issue. The mintage of 1804-dated coins was even smaller than the reported production total suggests, as die evidence confirms the BD-6 variety of 1803 was actually struck after the 1804 BD-1 coins, using the same reverse die. Thus the 1803 BD-6 coins must have been included in the mintage figures for 1804, as well. The BD-1 has a surviving population of 80-100 coins in all grades.

The only 1804-dated eagles actually struck in 1804 are the BD-1 coins, but the extremely rare BD-2 variety was struck in proof format in 1834-1835 for inclusion in the diplomatic presentation sets that also featured the 1804 dollars. Coinage of eagles was discontinued after 1804, because of widespread exportation and melting, and no more ten dollar coins were struck for circulation until 1838.

The present coin exhibits strongly impressed design elements in most areas, with just a touch of softness on the centers and a die bulge in the left obverse field. From a late state of the dies, the obverse shows a die crack from star 1 to the date and the reverse displays a series of arcing cracks from the last A in AMERICA, through the eagle's tail, and on through the letters in UNITED. Abrasions are minimal, but some planchet adjustment marks are evident on the bust and in the obverse field. The luster has been dimmed by a cleaning long ago, but the orange-gold surfaces remain attractive.
