Description

1804 Capped Bust Right Eagle, MS61
Crosslet 4, BD-1 Variety
Popular Final Date

1804 $10 Crosslet 4 MS61 NGC. BD-1, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b, with the crack from star 1 to the date and another through the letters in NITED. The 1804 eagle with a Crosslet 4 in the date represents the final year of the type and is also one of the scarcer issues in the series of Heraldic Eagle tens. Just 3,757 pieces were produced in 1804 from a single pair of dies, and die evidence suggests some of those coins were dated 1803. The correct mintage is possibly on the order of 2,500 specimens. Probably no more than 80-100 examples are extant today in all grades and conditions. An unusual percentage of 1804 Crosslet 4 eagles are known in cleaned or damaged states. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used to strike the BD-6 variety of 1803, which was actually struck after the 1804 BD-1 issue. The famous 1804-dated proof eagles with a Plain 4 in the date, BD-2, were struck 30 years later for diplomatic presentation purposes.

The strike details of this piece are fairly typical for the issue, showing softly defined facial features and bluntness on the interior of the eagle's right (facing) wing. The hair curls, however, are better-defined than is normally seen, and the eagle's breast feathers are almost fully articulated. There are several series of adjustment marks on the reverse, one on the upper portion of that side across the central clouds and stars, while additional clusters are found on the eagle's right wing and diagonally across the shield. Both sides display vibrant luster and lovely reddish accents. Census: 12 in 61, 11 finer (11/13).
