Description

1797 Ten Dollar, Red-Gold AU53
Heraldic Eagle, BD-4

1797 $10 Large Eagle, BD-4, High R.4, AU53 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther d/b. The reverse shows the usual crack through the R in AMERICA, but the crack through the C has not yet formed. The 1797 ten dollar is interesting in that four varieties exist, and all four feature distinct eagle types: Small Eagle, Heraldic Eagle with a long, thin neck, Heraldic Eagle with a short, thick neck, and Heraldic Eagle with a long, thick neck, as here. According to John Dannreuther, writing in Early U.S. Gold Varieties: "It is a transitional reverse between the tall and short neck reverses." This the is most accessible 1797 die marriage with 90 to 110 pieces believed extant from a mintage of 3,500 to 5,000 coins.

The obverse is mostly olive-gold with reddish accents around the devices, while the reverse is almost entirely deep red-gold in hue. Both sides are equally strong, showing just a bit of high-point friction. Faint adjustment marks appear across the portrait.
