Description

1792 Silver Half Disme, Judd-7
Famous Introductory Federal Issue

1792 H10C Half Disme, Judd-7, Pollock-7, R.4, PCGS Genuine. The PCGS number ending in .98 suggests Damage as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of a VG specimen that has been damaged. The 1792 half disme is the source of many numismatic tall tales involving Martha Washington. Her silverware is said to have been melted to provide the bullion for the issue, and a famous painting by John Dunsmore depicts her inspecting the pieces. Another story has the half dismes delivered personally to President Washington, who then distributed the coins as gifts to friends and associates. We do know that in his annual address to Congress, Washington referred to the issue as "a small beginning in the coinage of half dimes, the want of small coins in circulation calling the first attention to them." The present example is lightly toned in stone-gray and russet shades. The legends are bold except for a well-worn OF AM. Pleasing aside from a dig on the left obverse field, which is apparent opposite near AMERICA, and causes a localized bend.
