Description

1792 Silver Half Disme, VF Details
    Judd-7, First Federal Issue

1792 H10C Half Disme -- Plugged, Scratches -- NGC. VF Details. Judd-7, Pollock-7, R.4. This well-traveled example is crudely repaired or plugged at the center reverse, with multiple scratches on both sides of the coin. Nevertheless, it is an important survivor of the first Federal Issue and is considered by many to be America's first official circulating coinage. The issue is also listed as a United States pattern coin, perhaps because a copper planchet variety exists, but also because the coin pre-dates other official issues and denominations and was minted in John Harper's cellar, before the U.S. Mint officially opened. There is no doubt, though, that the silver half dismes circulated widely and were perceived as regular issues by the public. About 300 survivors remain from an original mintage of between 1,500 and 2,000 pieces, including many that were holed and later plugged.
