    1794 Half Dime, V-4, LM-4, AU55
    Colorful First-Year Example

1794 H10C AU55 PCGS. CAC. V-4, LM-4, R.4. The four known varieties of 1794 half dimes, the first-year issue, are all either very scarce (the present V-4, LM-4 die marriage -- the most available of the four -- along with the V-3, LM-3), rare (V-2, LM-2), or very rare (V-1, LM-1). This Choice AU example is a gorgeous little jewel, the die pairing confirmed by the obverse showing the date low and distant from the curl and bust, and the reverse with no outer berries under the left (facing) wing. Even though a few Mint State examples are known, this Choice AU example offers many of the benefits of those pieces at a fraction of the price. The colorful patina is clearly the product of decades of pristine preservation, the obverse pinkish-gray and showing some bold die clashing from the reverse before and behind the profile of Liberty. The reverse is also largely pinkish-gray, but dabs of saffron and orange appear in the palette as well. A couple of minor carbon spots appear near the extreme rims, one on each side, and in any case not overt. There is only light high-point rub amid the superlative eye appeal, and no major contact marks.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 22ZT, PCGS# 4250)
