1794 V-4, LM-4 Half Dime, MS63
Coined in Early 1795
1794 H10C MS63 NGC. V-4, LM-4, R.4. Silver dollars were the
first silver coins struck at the fledgling Philadelphia Mint in
October 1794, with half dollars coined at the same time. Although
they are dated 1794, the first half dimes were not minted until the
first quarter of 1795, with 7,756 pieces delivered by the chief
coiner to the Mint treasurer on March 30. An additional 78,660 half
dimes were struck later that same year.Many years ago, Walter Breen suggested that the surviving populations were just 10% dated 1794 and 90% dated 1795, leading him to suggest that the 7,756 coins delivered on March 30 were the only coins dated 1794. However, careful study of die states will show that the 1794 LM-4 half dimes were minted after the first two varieties of 1795, disproving Breen's research.
The total production of Flowing Hair half dimes was 86,416 coins, while rarity ratings assigned the various varieties suggest a surviving population of 21% dated 1794 and 79% dated 1795. If we apply those percentages to the total mintage, we find a production of approximately 18,000 coins dated 1794 and 68,000 dated 1795.
This Select Mint State example exhibits obverse clash marks, and a reverse die crack through the D of UNITED and the left branch of the wreath, continuing through the left facing wing to the eagle's breast feathers. Other die cracks and clash marks are also evident on the reverse. This reverse die was also used for 1795 LM-1 and LM-2, both varieties in an earlier die state.
Satiny light gray surfaces show a few trivial marks on each side, with full luster and lovely blue and gold toning. This splendid specimen is destined for a specialized early half dime collection or type set.(Registry values: P6)
